Washed Ashore

While visiting the Point Defiance Zoo with my family this morning we were introduced to the Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea project. With my love of both upcycling and the ocean this project spoke to me and though today isn't a typical blogging day for me, I feel this topic deserves it's very own mention. I do apologize in advance for the photos since the only device I had was my cell.

In 2010, Angela Haseltine Pozzi, founded the Washed Ashore project out of Bandon, Oregon. This non-profit group collects plastic that washes ashore and uses it to create huge animal art displays. If you're unfamiliar with the project please visit them at www.washedashore.org or you can see the results of this outstanding display in person at the zoo until October 21st.

For me, Washed Ashore is both gorgeous and appalling at the same time. Let me explain....I absolutely love the creativity, passion and purpose of Washed Ashore, however, I find it massively appalling that it is even necessary in the first place.

Our world is full of countless people who have no respect for mother nature and the planet we call home. We each have to be more vigilant and respectful of this gorgeous planet or the world as we know it will ultimately end. Mother nature provides us with so much, including the very air that makes living here possible! Why is it so hard for us as a species to do the same. Mother nature deserves our support, help and respect.

Seeing Washed Ashore in person showed me the power of art that expresses purpose and meaning. It is something that I truly wish to support and has inspired me to up my upcycling efforts even more from here on out.
