How to Create Textured Rollers

pinterest image: textured rollers

As a mixed media junkie, I love being able to add dimension and texture to my work. Now and days there are tons of pre-made rollers/rolling pins with some rather lovely designs on them but as a thrifty crafter I also love to be somewhat frugal in my spending, so I thought it’d be fun to explore ways to make my own and share them with you. You never know when they may come in handy, and you can always customize them anyway you’d like. Sounds like tons of fun right! Remember, if you can wrap and glue it around the toilet paper roll you can most certainly use it.

The base for each of my rollers is an empty toilet paper roll that I glued a household item to. These are just five of the variations I created but the possibilities are pretty much endless and each one will give you a different look.

Aluminum foil

Tear out of piece of foil that’s bigger than your toilet paper roll and crumple it up a bit before gluing it to the toilet paper roll.

Bubble wrap

Cut a of piece of bubble wrap to the size of your toilet paper roll and adhere it to the toilet paper roll. A great variation of this is to pop some of the bubbles randomly, gives you a whole new look.

Spackling

Brush, dap or roll some spackling onto your toilet paper roll and let dry completely. You will need to seal this roller in order to keep using it.

Hot glue

Use your hot glue gun to “draw” designs on your toilet paper roll. They possibilities on this one are limitless but you will need to seal this roller in order to keep using it.

Now that you know how to create your own rollers, you’re probably wondering how to roll with them. I just use a clay roller inside the toilet paper roll, but you could also use a nice round stick or any other smooth round object.

Hope you have fun getting creative and I’d love to see what you come up with.

‘Til next time,

Misty
