I don’t know about you, but I get a bunch of magazines in the mail, and I hate throwing them out. The upcycler in me just won’t allow it. So I collect them, just like a ton of other things, and they hang about in my craft stash until I get the desire to finally do something with them.
The great thing about magazines are they’re already premade and bound so you never have to worry about creating a “book” from scratch, but they can be altered easily when needed. The strong, durable paper is great for working with a variety of mediums and their sturdy construction make them ideal to hold your unique mixed media creations.
The best thing is, you can’t go wrong making a DIY altered magazine. There’s no right or wrong way to do it and there are so many possibilities. Play around with it and make it yours!
Supplies:
Old magazine
Paint brushes
Cardstock: 3-4 different patterns
Stamps
Tissue paper
Paint pen
Tear your cardstock(s) into random pieces.
Using the gel medium, random glue down the cardstock pieces however you’d like, making sure to cover the whole magazine page.
Add a layer of gel medium of over the cardstock layers to seal them. Let dry completely.
Stamp images and phrases randomly over the page.
Drip alcohol ink along the edges, hold the paper vertically and let the ink run across the page.
Repeat step five randomly as many times as desired and let dry.
Draw leaves, flowers or other designs randomly on the page and paint with alcohol ink.
Tear small pieces of tissue paper and semi crinkle it.
Use the gel medium to glue down the tissue paper wherever you’d like.
Add a layer of gel medium of over the tissue paper to seal it. Let dry completely.
Handwrite, stencil or stamp a quote somewhere on the page.
Repeat steps 1-11 on all remaining pages.
