Tricks of the Trade
I've run across a lot of people who've taken one look at my art and immediately said "I wish I could do that". Well here's great news, you can! Myself and countless others offer workshops and tutorials for anyone looking to try their hand at mixed media.
But here's the biggest secret...shh come closer, are you ready? It's so easy and there's no right way to do it.
Everybody gets so caught up in techniques and proper ways to do things when really, experimentation is the best part. You have to do what feels right to you; what speaks from your heart straight to your soul. And MOST importantly STOP comparing yourself and what you do to ANYONE.
I love watching videos, learning new techniques, and trying out new ideas but I use all that new information and do it my way to create things I love. And guess what? I'm never afraid! If something doesn't come out right I just change it or start over. It's not the end of the world.
Be fearless with your artwork. Be brave and experiment. Your passion and voice will show through.
So from one mixed media artist to another (that's you!) here are a few must haves I highly recommend.
1. A free spirit and an open mind. This will take you a long way, keep your heart happy and counter frustration.
2. Paint. Doesn't matter if it's watercolor, acrylic, oils or any combination of these. Paint is a necessity. Find what you love and have a couple on hand at all times. You never know when the mood to create will strike.
3. Gel medium. This is an all around great item to have on hand. It's easy to use as an adhesive, can be used to create protective layers and easily mixes with paint.
4. Paint brushes. A variety is best!
5. Stencils. They come in so many styles now that you can find practically anything and if you can't you can easily make one. Variety is a good choice.
6. A mentor, friend or inspiring person. Someone who's passionate about art. Who's energy and work makes you want to create every time you see them. I highly recommend finding someone you love following. They can be a great source for inspiration, someone to bounce ideas/frustrations off of and keep you motivated when you get stuck. My personal favorites are Shawn Petite and Gabrielle Pollacco.
'Til next time,
Misty
