Becoming You
The world is overrun by people, each with their own ideas, styles and agendas. Now, with the internet at our fingertips it's even easier to get lost in the jumble of others.
Unlike those lucky few who burst from the womb knowing exactly who they are, most of us take years to develop ourselves. Tragically the human species is very susceptible to suggestion -yes, I know that can also be a good thing, but it can make finding your own voice incredibly hard.
It's easy to get lost in a sea of should and should not, drowning in other's successes and inevitably comparing yourself to every single person you run across (personally or online).
We've all come across that "perfect" person or envied something someone else has; a life, relationship, car, job, etc.
Talk about a personality killer! When you don't know who you are, you lose yourself trying to be EVERYONE else. Living like this is daunting, stressful and everything but "perfect". Believe me, I spent 30 years of my life trying to figure out who I was and I still don't have it down.
One important thing I've learned is to listen to myself. Yes, you need to take into consideration what others are saying but at the end of the day you need to listen to yourself because YOU have to live with yourself, YOU are what's important. YOU are the only person who knows the real you and YOU are the ONLY person who can make yourself happy.
Finding yourself doesn't have to be daunting or scary, it can actually be fun, exciting and freeing. It doesn't have to happen when you're ten or even twenty, maybe you need to reinvent "you" at forty.
Here are a few things that have helped me along the way.
Embrace the basics. By the time we reach fifth grade, most of us, have a pretty good understanding of what we do and don't like, go back to those things that light you up inside. Maybe you loved to sing, dance, create things, color or garden. Dig deeper and figure out what you loved so much about those things and why you left them behind.
Explore the world around you. Start with your basics and explore everything else. Push yourself past your limits and embrace new. How will you ever know what lights your fire if you never give it a chance?
Drop everything- that makes you unhappy. This could be a job, a relationship, a hobby, etc. Anything you picked up because you were trying to prove something, be someone or make someone else happy.
YOU know YOU better than anyone else. So be YOU; you are spectacular!
'til next time,
Misty
